Two day in Kakheti
Day 1. Bodbe - Signaghi - 16th century wine cellar
We leave Tbilisi and head to Kakheti. On the way, we will stop at the KTW winery, where you will try their wines. In the village of Bodbe, we will visit a lovely women's monastery where the first saint of Georgia, Equal-to-the-Apostles St. Nino, is buried. From there, it's just a stone's throw to the ancient town of Signagi, which is beautifully situated above the Alazani Valley. We will take a stroll through its streets and fortress walls. We continue on, descending into the valley, and visit a well-preserved 16th-century princely wine cellar. There is also an interesting ethnographic corner with antique Georgian village utensils. Here we will have a master class on making khachapuri, khinkali, and Georgian sweet called churchkhela. We will have lunch with homemade wine at the same winery. After lunch, we cross the Alazani Valley and stop for the night in the small town of Kvareli.
Day 2. Khareba - Gremi - Alaverdi - Tsinandali - Telavi
We'll start the morning off right, Georgian style. Near Kvareli, there's the wine tunnel of Khareba. You'll have a tour of the wine cellar and a tasting of their excellent wines right in the tunnel. We'll continue our journey through the Alazani Valley. We'll visit the royal castle of Gremi and one of Georgia's largest churches Alaverdi (10th century). Then we'll head to the estate of the Chavchavadze princes, where we'll see their mansion, historical park and ancient winery. We'll briefly stop in Telavi, the administrative center of Kakheti. We'll have a farewell lunch in Kakheti and by evening, we'll return to Tbilisi via the scenic Gombori Pass, which may be low in altitude but is still picturesque.
